David Lopes provides dentistry for today’s families
Dentist David Lopes calls his practice Smile Designs, but what goes into those smiles makes the difference in the treatment experience for his patients.
It’s his attention to every detail of the patient experience, from the time someone walks into his office at 1150 Suncast Lane, Suite 6, in the El Dorado Hills Business Park, to seeing the results of the dental treatment.
It’s his concern for the role of dental treatment in the health of the whole patient.
It’s his affirmative response to providing affordable dental care for people.
After completing his doctorate at the University of California at San Francisco, Dr. Lopes spent two years working with a dentist in Colorado. He credits his mentor for his approach to dentistry, a combination of maximum customer service and the latest technology.
Personal service begins when patients enter the office. The reception area is inviting, with friendly staff not hidden behind a wall. There is a complimentary juice bar and high-tech coffee machine; a Kid’s Zone that beckons the little ones.
Lopes said he sees one patient at a time. Though some might call that “old-fashioned,” it’s the way he likes to work.
Massaging dental chairs, stereo headphones, blankets, neck pillows and a beautiful view create patient comfort during treatment.
When appropriate, Lopes uses laser technology or air abrasion. “Most of these procedures can be performed without anesthesia,” he explained. “They are a nice alternative. They are very quiet.”
Lopes also provides cosmetic dentistry: veneers, crowns, implants and teeth whitening.
He said patients young and old can have their teeth realigned to an optimum position. He uses Invisalign, a clear, custom-molded aligner that can be removed to allow the wearer to eat and brush teeth.
Lopes also emphasizes preventive care. He is concerned about the effect of poor oral health on the whole human system. An infection in the mouth can get in the bloodstream and affect other parts of the body. People going through radiation treatment for cancer, or whose immune systems are weak for other reasons, should make sure to take care of their dental health, Lopes said. “The aging population is a big concern in dentistry,” he added.
David Lopes, DDS Smile Designs is a Delta Dental premier member. The office also takes other forms of dental insurance. But Lopes said dental benefit plans have not changed since the 1970s and need to be restructured. A lot of people have no dental insurance or are underinsured.
He has partnered with Quality Dental Plan to create a membership program that covers all preventive care, cleanings, X-rays and exams at 100 percent with an annual membership fee. QDP members also receive benefits on restorative care, such as fillings, crowns, implants, periodontal maintenance and orthodontic treatment. He said the membership program is modeled after Costco’s.
Lopes lives in El Dorado Hills with his wife Jeanine; son Kyle, 11; and daughter, Nina, 7. He enjoys outdoor sports and coaches his children’s soccer teams. He was a Cub Scout leader; now Jeanine is a Girl Scout leader.
Lopes said owning a business and having a family in El Dorado Hills allows for a good balance. His staff of five are all active as well. Treatment coordinator and Registered Dental Assistant Tamme expresses the staff’s attitude. She said she “enjoys coming to work knowing that she is part of a team whom loves what they do and helping people change their smiles.”
Lopes added, “We can do what we do and feel good at the end of the day.”
