Ponderosa swimmers split with Pleasant Grove

The Ponderosa swim teams held their first Delta River League meet of the season at the Cameron Park Community Service District pool where they’ve been training while their home pool at the school is being refurbished.

The Bruin boys won five events but were edged by Pleasant Grove by a single point, 84-85.

“Our team has been training very well,” Coach Aimee Lehr said. “We had several kids who went best times today. To do this at the first meet of the season was exciting.”

Andy Cunningham was a multiple winner and section qualifier in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 46.66 seconds), the 100 backstroke (55.86) and the 400 free relay. He and teammates Graham McClone, Stephen Schrichfield and Spencer Harrison qualified for the section meet and won the race in 3:28.57.

McClone won the 50 free with a section qualifying time of 22.90 seconds and Schrichfield touched first in the 100 free with a time of 53.77.

“I have been impressed by the culture of Pondo athletics to want to work hard,” coach Kristen Stumbaugh said. “The swimmers who have been working hard at practice swam exceptionally well.”

The Bruin girls’ won all but one event, out-swimming the Eagles 112 to 57.  Multiple event winners and section qualifying swims came from Samantha Woo in the 200 free (2:07.38) and 100 back (1:05.64); Taylor Lehr in the 200 individual medley (2:17.76) and the 500 free (5:23.46); and Gina Troquato in the 50 free (26.52) and 100 butterfly (1:06.98). Also placing first was Jordan Shaner in the 100 free with a time of 59.49.

The Ponderosa girls swept the three relay races. The 200 medley relay team, including Lehr, Katie Weiss, Troquato and Woo placed first with a time of 1:56.86; the 200 free relay (Weiss, Troquato, Kylie Wiesner and Shaner) finished first in 1:46.74; and the 400 free relay (Woo, Shaner, Heidi Hill, Lehr) touched first with a time of 4:01.99.

“We have many swimmers who were competing for the first time and they did an amazing job,” coach Lehr said. “Fast swims today set up for an exciting season.”

The Bruins face intra-county rival Oak Ridge March 23 on the road at the El Dorado Hils CSD pool. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
