Mind the drought

EDITOR:

I think it is important to participate in one’s own government by taking ownership in your own community. One of our current problems is the drought issue. The government is searching for solutions, the El Dorado Irrigation District has issued a stage 2 water warning and we should be reflecting on our own households for ways to cut back as well.

I know you cannot control the weather, but you can control your own water usage. There are many ways you can conserve water through your own daily habits. One way to save water and not waste it is to not let the water faucet run, to limit shower time and limit toilet flushing. Another idea is to catch rain water by leaving out a barrel, then using it to water plants, flowers and landscaping. EID has also suggested to cut out a cycle on your sprinkler system, add mulch around trees and plants, or plant low-water use trees and plants.

If our community does not make some of these voluntary changes, we may end up in a water crisis, where we will have to make mandatory reductions or end up in water rationing for emergency health and safety purposes. We should all, as a community, take ownership of this drought issue and participate by making some of these changes. If we all help each other during this drought, we can make a difference.
