Passport Weekend a hot ticket

PLACERVILLE — Wine drinkers and fans of El Dorado wine country are making this year’s two Passport weekends in April a prized event.

El Dorado Winery Association’s Passport 2013 weekends are April 13-14 and 20-21, and sales have been booming for the reinvigorated annual bash that engulfs this Sierra foothill region — and this year it features El Dorado’s celebrated wines, paired with food, music and the magic of Hollywood.

“We want all our friends to know we have plenty of tickets left, but they are going fast,” said Beth Jones EDWA President and co-owner of Lava Cap Winery. “There’s such an excitement around the two weekends this year and we don’t want anyone to miss it.”

Sales are far ahead of last year and near record pace, which is particularly impressive at a time when there are so many wine events to choose among. The increased popularity comes partly from all the recent buzz and raves about El Dorado County wines among wine drinkers and from critics and the wine press.

But also new this year, a Passport ticket will take people on a Wine Tour of Fame with each winery rolling out the red carpet and creating a four-star setting based on a major movie or star, and they’re matching their wine, food, look and people to that theme.

“We keep hearing how excited everyone is to see what all the wineries are doing,” said Terrie Prod’hon, EDWA’s Public Relations and Marketing Committee chair and owner of Mount Aukum Winery. “Actually, I’m really excited to see, too. We’re doing ‘Casablanca,’ and there are wineries doing ‘Raiders of the Lost Arc,’ ‘The Godfather,’ James Bond, and all sorts of other fun stuff.”

Passes are $70 for a weekend, $40 for Sundays and just $25 for designated drivers. More information and tickets are available at eldoradowines.org or by calling the El Dorado Winery Association at (800) 306-3956.
