Cantare Chorale welcomes new musical director

Mariia Pechenova

Cantare Chorale of the Sierra Foothills is thrilled to announce the selection of its new director, Mariia Pechenova.

Hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia, Pechenova has lived in the United States since 2012. Her short stay here has been punctuated by excellent references and performances.

In 2014 she was the assistant professor of music at Folsom Lake College where she assisted with and conducted the college choir. She is also the pianist and organist for traditional services with St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in El Dorado Hills.

“From madrigals to contemporary music, folk tunes and jazz, my musical ambition lies in the great master works,” Pechenova said. “My primary ambition is always to encourage and inspire the group I am working with to achieve their musical goals beyond their expectations.

“I have always enjoyed choral work,” she continued. “With my extensive experience and knowledge of choral vocal music and conducting, I believe I can be a great addition to Cantare by providing music education and guidance leading to great musical achievements and success.”

Pechenova attended Cantare Chorale’s  performance in the SacSings Choral Festival at the Harris Center at Folsom Lake College last month. She was delighted with the choir’s performance skills and sound quality. She said she believes that the group has huge potential for further development.

Pechenova’s background includes a master’s degree in conducting at St. Petersburg State University in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2012. She was assistant conductor of the St. Petersburg Women’s Choir led by Sergei Yekimov.

She has performed in operas as soloist and as a member of the choir in recitals of Russian, German, Italian and British opera in the different concert halls in St. Petersburg, Moscow and the Ukraine.

She also participated in opera performances and concerts as a soloist with such prominent artists and conductors as Vladimir Miller, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Elena Obraztsova and other conductors Alexander Sladkovsky and Alexander Tchernushenko.

The 2014-15 season promises to be an exciting new learning adventure with Pechenova as the director. This is an excellent time for new singers to join the community chorale. Under Pechenova’s direction and instruction, singers will be challenged to develop their vocal skills and performing arts, and will have the opportunity to share the joy of music with the residents of El Dorado County and surrounding areas.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity for musical development right at our doorstep,” said Ruth O’Shea.

Auditions for new singers will be held the first two weeks in August. Call (530) 677-6964 or visit CantareChorale.com for information on how you can become a part of this community singing group.
