The award-winning Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Company will waltz its way to Three Stages at Folsom Lake College with its unforgettable showcase “Capture the Magic.”

Dazzling costumes and cleverly complicated choreography will leave audience members of all ages on the edges of their seats when they perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.

The Ballroom Dance Company hosts an ensemble of 32 dancers, each trained to compete, entertain, and most importantly dance with grace and precision. Their hard work was recently recognized in September at the annual Embassy Ball, hosted in Irvine, where they won the U.S. National Formation Dance Championships. This 29th consecutive win is representative of the team’s professionalism and outstanding performance skills.

Along with competing and performing world-wide, the Ballroom Dance Company also takes a special interest in the communities they tour. This tour to California — Folsom, Oakland, Paradise, Modesto, Santa Clara, Yountville, and Fresno — will include special school assembly performances and a dance workshop for high school students in Paradise. Using their talents, the company members are able to inspire younger generations and give back to those they visit.

The impressive company is led by artistic directors, Lee and Linda Wakefield. Both Lee and Linda hold memberships in the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance and have degrees in Standard and Latin dancing. The husband and wife pair has led the company towards excellence since they began directing it in 1980. This tour to California is special for the Wakefields who as newlyweds were residence of Modesto.

“Touring in California is always a homecoming,” said Linda. “It’s a great place for the students to perform because the audience members in California are so receptive. They are accustomed to the fine arts and are very open minded to the choreography and performances.”

The Ballroom Dance Company originates in the Department of Dance of the College of Health and Human Performance at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
