Fairytale Town ready for fall

For more than 50 years, Fairytale Town has offered children and families a safe place to imagine, play and learn. This fall more programs will enchant and delight visitors.

Fairytale town is located at 3901 Land Park Drive in Sacramento. Weekday admission is $4.50 for adults and children ages 2 and older. Weekend admission is $5.50 for adults and children ages 2 and older. Children ages 1 and younger are always free. Beginning Nov. 1, Fairytale Town will be open Thursdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the winter season, weather permitting.

Sept. 7: Grandparents Day
Celebrate National Grandparents Day at Fairytale Town from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring grandma and grandpa for an enjoyable day of play in the park. Grandparents receive free admission when accompanied with a child ages 0 to 12. This event is sponsored in part by ScholarShare College Savings Plan and New York Life.

Sept. 13: Sacramento Play Summit
Play is the most important work of childhood. The second annual Sacramento Play Summit, presented by Fairytale Town, the Sacramento Public Library and ScholarShare Speaks from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 828 I St. in Sacramento, aims to highlight the importance of play, the many types of play, ways to incorporate play into daily and school life, and more. Dr. Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute for Play and author of “Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul,” will be a featured keynote speaker. Early bird registration is available through Aug. 31: $35 per person; $25 students, seniors, members of Fairytale Town, Friends of the Sacramento Library and ScholarShare account holders. General registration begins Sept. 1: $45 per person; $35 students, seniors, members of Fairytale Town, Friends of the Sacramento Library and ScholarShare account holders. This event is sponsored by ScholarShare College Savings Plan and Sutter Health.

Sept. 19: Talk Like a Pirate Day
Ahoy, me hearties! Join Fairytale Town in celebrating international Talk Like a Pirate Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn pirate vocabulary, songs of the seas and tales of adventure on the high seas at “Pirate Skool,” presented by the Pirates of Sacramento. Enjoy plenty of pirate themed fun, games and activities for yer whole family, savvy? Talk Like a Pirate Day is free with paid park admission.

Sept. 27 & 28: ScholarShare Children’s Book Festival
Enjoy readings and presentations by children’s book authors and illustrators, storytelling performances, hands-on literacy activities and family play time at the largest early childhood literacy festival in the region, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Barney Saltzberg, author and illustrator of “Beautiful Oops” and nearly 50 titles for children, will headline the two-day Festival. Admission to the Festival and Fairytale Town is free to the public thanks to the event’s sponsor, ScholarShare College Savings Plan. Additional sponsors include Wells Fargo, Golden 1 Credit Union, IKEA, KVIE Public Television and The Sacramento Bee.

Oct. 24-26: 28th Annual Safe & Super Halloween: The Adventures of Percy Jackson
Enter the mythological world of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” for three nights of trick-or-treating and family fun, 5 to 9 p.m. Young heroes can go on a quest to Mount Olympus to see the infamous Olympian Zeus. Visit the lair of Polyphemus the Cyclops, the replica Parthenon, the Oracle of Delphi and Medusa’s garden — just remember not to look her directly in the eyes! Keep an eye out for plenty of mythological characters and creatures along the way. Plus, enjoy 17 candy stations, hands-on activities, a costume parade and performances by Puppet Art Theater Company (additional cost). Tickets go on sale Sept. 1. Advance tickets are $7 members and $10 non-members. Beginning Oct. 24, tickets are $9 members and $12 nonmembers. Puppet show tickets are $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers. The event is sponsored by Smile Business Products, ScholarShare College Savings Plan, SMUD, Make A Smile Dentistry and SAFE Credit Union.

Nov. 28: Free Admission Day & Canned Food Drive
On the day after Thanksgiving, Fairytale Town offers free admission to families who bring a canned food item for donation to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services  Holiday Spirit of Giving Food Drive. The day also includes free arts and crafts activities and a puppet show. Puppet show tickets are $1 for members and $2 for non-members. The day is sponsored in part by SAFE Credit Union.
