The weather may be cold, but some hot music will heat up the campus with Sacramento State’s annual Winter Jazz Festival on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The daylong event draws more than 40 jazz ensembles, combos and vocal groups from middle and high schools throughout the region, along with instructors and professionals for a mix of master classes and non-competitive live performances.

“Though competition is a vital aspect of the professional musical world, our mission is to simply showcase the efforts and talents of our participants from a purely educational perspective,” said Steve Roach, Sacramento State’s director of jazz studies.

This year’s event includes concerts by vocalist Jamie Davis, the Kandinsky Effect, Sacramento State Jazz Ensembles and the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra. The festival starts at 8 a.m. with student groups in clinics and performances at various locations in Capistrano Hall and other campus locales. The Kandinsky Effect performs at 12:15 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. More student group performances run from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the closing concert featuring Davis at 6:30, also in the Music Recital Hall.

Davis has a deep, baritone voice and has performed with the likes of Milt Jackson, Melba Moore and the Count Basie Orchestra. His repertoire ranges from Cole Porter to Stevie Wonder to Charles Mingus.

The Kandinsky Effect has been described as a jazz power trio for the 21st century. Their music is marked by fierce grooves, subtle electronic textures and a commitment to empathic group interplay.

Cost for the entire day is $10 at the door and the public is invited to drop by anytime to enjoy the morning and afternoon student sessions.
