Internationally known and local landscape and maritime artist June Carey will introduce her work in progress, and highly anticipated, “Amalfi Coast” at a reception a American Visions Art Gallery in Historic Folsom on Jan. 28.
The image of the new work looks down on Minori from the town of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, Italy. Carey will showcase her latest releases as well as many original studies and limited edition pieces. She also will talk about her adventures painting in Northern California as well as Italy. The event is open to the public from 4 to 8 p.m. with wine tasting, Italian margaritas and appetizers.
June Carey is one of the country’s leading landscape painters. She is self-taught and recalls using oil paints for the first time at age 12 and has been painting ever since. When asked why her work appeals to so many June replied, “I want to create, recreate, a place that I want to be. I first have to fall in love with a scene, and then I choose to be in it and try to paint everything that allows the viewer to be there, so that they see and love what I experience as well.”
June Carey’s newest upcoming release “Amalfi Coast” does just that. The artist recently took a trip to Ravello on the Italian Coast.
“It was one of the most wonderful times I have ever had. I want to go back; it’s magic,” Carey explained. “I love all the terracing of the vineyards on the hills above the Mediterranean. I remember below the wall of the distant church there was a man working in the vineyard. It was the first of June and things were as green as they could be. The light here is so wonderful. I will never do it justice, but I can try. It’s what’s getting me through this winter.
“I’m tired of painting what I am supposed to,” the artist added. “I want to do something new and exciting. So, I dropped everything to try this tiny study. The Amalfi coast of Italy where I was so happy last summer has been calling out for me to paint it.”
Amalfi Coast can be ordered the day of the show. Other June Carey pieces purchased day of the show can be highlighted by the artist the day of the show
