Sierra Pastel Society celebrates ‘Spring Brilliance’

The Sierra Pastel Society invites the public to attend its “Spring Brilliance” membership show at the El Dorado Arts Council Artspace Gallery at 459 Main St. in Placerville, opening Monday, May 2. The show runs through June 26, with the gallery open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and a later viewing on the third Saturday Art Walk evenings, May 21 and June 18.

Members of the Sierra Pastel Society are to bring paintings to EDAC Artspace between 9 and 11 a.m. on May 2. Each member may submit up to up to three entries to be judged, plus up to two miniatures that will not be judged; the total not to exceed five entries. Maximum painting size is 36 inches on a side. The entry fee per painting is $6 and for each miniature the fee is $3.

If you are not a member,you may join when you deliver your original soft pastel paintings (membership fee is $25). Paintings will be grouped in the following categories: Land/Seascape, Floral/Still Life, Portrait/Figure, Animal/Other, Signature (all categories of paintings by our distinguished Signature Members) and the unjudged Miniature (minis are those whose outside frame measurement of two adjacent sides equals 24 inches or less).

An Artist’s Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, prior to the third Saturday Art Walk. Members will pick up their paintings on Sunday, June 26.

Judging the show is nationally acclaimed pastelist Gil Dellinger, a retired professor from the University of the Pacific where he taught drawing and painting for 30 years. His beautiful landscapes, seascapes, and dramatic vistas of the Southwest have inspired many artists and have been featured in the Pastel Journal, Southwest Art, the Artist Magazine and other publications. He is a Signature Member of The Pastel Society of America, the Plein Air Painters of America, The California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.

There will be cash prizes for first, second and third in each category, along with awards for “Best of Show” and “People’s Choice.” All paintings will be for sale; the artist receives 70 percent of sale price. For more information contact Pat Aragon, show chair, at (530) 620-2432.
