Folsom Cyclebration – fun for the entire family

School may be under way or starting for most, but there are still plenty of opportunities to get out with the entire family this summer.

Folsom celebrates its sixth annual bike festival, Cyclebration, Sept. 6–8. For three days, bike enthusiasts can enjoy 10 events and lots of family fun. Members of the public are welcome to participate or simply watch.

Here are a few of the events that will be featured:

Fam Jam

Friday kicks off at 5 p.m. with an “Air Jam Edition” of Fam Jam at Cummings Family Park. The family atmosphere will feature food vendors and open riding.

The best part: Kids, amateurs and pros can compete in all three events for more than $2,000 in prizes and cash. The course is all-rider friendly.

Fam Jam will feature an airbag for all riders — practice flips, whips and tricks into an inflatable airbag that “guarantees” a safe landing no matter how crazy the trick one tries. Bicycles Plus will have a freestyle scooter team on hand to shred the skatepark, followed by a competition to show off scooter skills. For the speed-racers out there, put down your fastest time on a new pumptrack to win big. The Folsom Fam Jam is presented by Bicycles Plus.

Cummings Family Park is located at 1775 Creekside Drive. There will be a scooter demo and competition at 6 p.m.

Folsom Prison race

Ever want to try out the beautiful trails built on the Folsom Prison property? Well, here’s your opportunity — but the course will only be open to non-racing riders and registered racers. Prison breaks not allowed!

This mountain bike cross-country event starts at high noon on Sept. 7. Riders will race from the Folsom Rodeo grounds and work their way over to the south area of Folsom Prison. The course features dirt and gravel roads, grass, lots of flume trail and a brand new single track that includes three bridge crossings.

There is approximately 400 feet of climbing per lap. This event is limited to 250 racers and entry is $30.

Anyone wanting to check the course out prior to the cross-country event is strongly cautioned NOT to ride on the prison property prior to the practice day or race day. You will be stopped by the prison guards who regularly patrol the area. This is a secured state prison area, only open to the Cyclebration for the race and practice days, so please do not jeopardize future use of this venue.

Registration is required for this event. Cost is $10 per person (pre-registered racers are free). Limited support will be available on the course so riders must be self-supported. Go online for details.

Fun for all

Additional events include a bike swap and beer garden, a south canal time trial, century/metric century/half metric century rides, circuit racing and much, much more.

The Folsom Cyclebration is Sept. 6, 7 and 8. Visit folsomcyclebration.com for events, entry fees (if any), dates and locations. Also, keep in mind that registration is closing for some events, so sign up as soon as possible if you plan to participate.
