Red velvet, chocolate chip, salted caramel … is your sweet tooth aching yet?

Cupcake enthusiasts won’t have to wait much longer for Charene Whorton to unveil her delicious creations at her new shop — Copper Lantern Cupcakes — scheduled to open later this month inside Cameron Park’s Yo’So Yogurt.

“This whole area needs some cupcakes,” said Whorton, 43, who lives in El Dorado Hills.

“We have a community full of small children and businesses. Residents get tired of always having to drive to Folsom to purchase items, cupcakes being one of them,” she explained.

Whorton has been baking “forever.” “I’ve loved to bake since I was a kid,” she said. She fine-tuned her hobby while running a surgical practice for 10 years and then in working in real estate for another decade. Family and friends often commissioned Whorton to whip up sweet treats for birthdays and special events. She happily obliged and, about six months ago, decided to turn her passion into a business.

“It’s always what I’ve loved to do,” Whorton explained. “I love to bake cupcakes … and be creative with them.”

Whorton creates all her own recipes from scratch and said she never stops trying to improve her creations. That requires some help from her husband Steve Whorton, an air traffic controller. “He’s my taste tester,” Charene explained. “He has to eat them all.”

Tough job.

Children Chanelle Reynolds, 17, and Michael, 7, also dip their fingers into the frosting from time to time. In fact, that’s all Michael said he likes to eat.

Personally, Charene said her red velvet cupcake really takes the cake. “It’s the perfect blend of a little bit of chocolate, moist cake and cream cheese frosting,” she said.

Watching people enjoy the cupcakes really makes Charene smile, she said. That’s one of the many reasons why she decided to open her own shop. She approached Yo’So owners Erin and Kevin Finnell last year about building a business inside their business. Now, Copper Lantern Cupcakes is just a few finishing touches away from opening its counter. Charene is already offering cupcake catering services for birthdays, weddings and special events, and she’ll handle any special order that comes her way.

“I’m nervous but excited,” Charene said of opening her business. “I think once people know where we are it will be great.”
