High-tech reconnects local couple

Tara McKinnon and Peter Meadows married Saturday, Aug. 31. The Folsom couple dated while attending Oak Ridge High School in the mid-1990s. Peter, 36, graduated in 1995 and Tara, 35, in 1996.

The couple broke up when Peter left the area to join the Army. Peter was an intelligence specialist for eight years, then spent six years in the Navy. Now he is an executive recruiter for Strategic IT Staffing in Roseville.

Tara became a hairdresser and today works at Aqua FX salon in Folsom. She married and had two children but after her divorce kept thinking of Peter and often told family and friends he was “the one who got away.”

“I’d go running at Cameron Park Lake just like we used to when we were dating in high school,” said Tara.“Running there made me feel close to him.”

Today, the couple calls the reunion “coming full circle.” They reconnected on Facebook in 2012 and the rest is history.

“The first time we talked on the phone we were up until 4:30 a.m.,” said Tara. “I knew I was in love with him. I told him to come back to the area from Southern California and I’d cut his hair!”

To introduce him to her boys, ages 3 and 8, Tara had Peter meet them at Chuck E. Cheese.

“I wanted him to know what he was in for, so I picked the most obnoxious place possible,” laughed Tara.“But Pete loves my boys as his own.”

“When we dated we were teenagers, so I never saw Tara’s mother side,” said Peter. “Seeing how she is as a mother is what I love most about her. She takes care of me as well as the boys. No one has ever treated me this way.”

“Peter has seen a lot in the military,” added Tara. “But he’s so nurturing and kind as well as strong mentally and physically.”

The couple exchanged vows at Cameron Park Lake Saturday and will live in Folsom. Peter is the son of Don and Linda Meadows of Sutter Creek and Tara is the daughter of Randall and Candace McKinnon of Cameron Park.
