Bryce Scott has always been proud of being an Oak Ridge Trojan.

When he was in fifth grade Scott was one of the ball boys for the squad, coached by his father Steve, that won the Sierra Valley Conference, Sac-Joaquin Section Division II, NorCal and the CIF State Division II titles.

“It was great being around them,” said Scott, now a senior point guard for his dad on this year’s varsity basketball team. “I really looked up to them. I even practiced with them. I always wanted to be in the gym 24/7.”

Two players on that championship team who stood out were guard Hiram Thompson, who Scott wanted to emulate, and Ryan Anderson.

“He taught me all his moves,” Scott said of Thompson. “He’s humble.”

Anderson, who played ball at Cal for two years and is now the starting forward for the Orlando Magic, was “amazing” — then and now — in Scott’s assessment.

“He’s worked harder than most people (playing basketball),” Scott said of Anderson. “He could take over a game in a second. He really just wants to win.”

Seven years later, Scott and Oak Ridge begin tonight what coaches refer to as the “second season,” when Troy, seeded 13, opens the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs at No. 4 West. The winner advances to Friday’s quarterfinal game against the Bethel-Granite Bay winner.

Scott and the Trojans look forward to the postseason, especially after dropping their Delta River League finale to Ponderosa on a shot at the buzzer — giving Oak Ridge a 4-6 league record, 14-12 overall.

“That was really hard game for us,” Scott said.

The Trojans will set their sights on a West squad that took second place in the Tri-City Athletic League.

“It’s time to refocus,” Scott said. “We’ve had a couple of team meetings (after Friday’s game). They (West) are very athletic. They can shoot.”

It goes both ways as the Wolfpack will have their hands full with Scott, who averages 21.7 points per game. Dangerous behind the arc with a team-leading 44 three-pointers, Scott is one of two Oak Ridge players averaging in double figures: senior guard Matt Howard scores at a 10.7 points per game clip.

Scott can also score at the free throw line where he’s made 144-of-192 shots. He’s also dished out 73 assists on the season while on the backboard, Scott pulls in 5.2 rebounds per game.

After he graduates from Oak Ridge, Scott continues his education and basketball dreams at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania on a scholarship.

While he plans to major in business, Scott currently has his mind on his academic studies at Oak Ridge and enjoying the final months of his senior year — all while preparing to play at the next level.

“Working on screens and rolls,” Scott said of his game. “I’m working on my game to get better for college. It’s a whole different type of basketball; better defenders (and) more athletic teams.”

Scott plans to coach basketball after his playing days are over and follow in his dad’s footsteps. He’s off to a good start, assisting an eighth-grade boys basketball team.

“I have a passion for the game,” Scott said. “I love to coach. I will definitely always have basketball around me.”

Would Scott like to coach his soon-to-be alma mater? The answer is clearly obvious.

“I’d love to come back here,” Scott said enthusiastically.

Intertwining a live musical and visual experience, Academy Award-winner J-Walt utilizes a drawing tablet, a sound system and a joy stick to create Spontaneous Fantasia, a virtual world created on a giant screen in real time, all before a live audience.

This incredible show comes to Three Stages at Folsom Lake College March 2-4.

“J-Walt’s work has compared to laser shows or a Pink Floyd concert updated for a new century, but even that doesn’t do it justice,” Executive Director Dave Pier noted. “We’re very happy to have him for three shows in the intimacy of our 200 seat City Studio Theater.”

Pioneering multimedia artist J-Walt is a performer interactive designer, filmmaker, graphic artist, and composer. For two decades, he has been at the forefront of interactive art and computer performance, expanding the uses of computer animation into uncharted territories. His Spontaneous Fantasia performances combine aspects of animation, video games, music, theater, dance and architecture into a seamless new art form. He has performed for thrilled audiences around the US as well as in Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Edmonton.

On line video of the work can be seen at spontaneousfantasia.com/videos/.

In March of 2006 J-Walt won a Technical Academy Award for his development of a real-time pre-visualization system, and in 2003, he received a Themed Entertainment Award for a digital puppetry attraction. He produced location-based video games for Sony. He was a founding member of Disney’s VR studio, which created a state-of-the-art virtual reality experience for Disney’s EPCOT center in 1995.

J-Walt’s Spontaneous Fantasia will perform in Three Stages on Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3, at 8 p.m., and again on Sunday, March, 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 to $25 with student tickets available for $12 (student ID is required at the door). Tickets are available online at www.threestages.netor from Three Stages ticket office at (916) 608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time.

Rosemarie Gerould directs A.R. Gurney’s smart and funny tale of mid life crisis, marriage and pet ownership — “Sylvia” — at The Studio Theatre in Sacramento.

Greg (Aurelio Martinez) and Kate (Jennifer York) have entered a new stage of life. Their kids are in college and they now have the freedom to spend time together and on their own personal projects. Kate embraces this chance by creating an exciting program to teach classical works to children in inner cities. Greg is … bored. Sick of his job and with no direction, he spends his afternoons in the park until he meets her … Sylvia (Sophie Blackburn) — an exuberant Labrador/poodle mix, she is the dog that has been missing from his life.

And she doesn’t fit into Kate’s plans at all.

Steve Buri rounds out the cast playing friends and acquaintances of the no-longer-happy couple.

Can a dog solve a man’s problems? Can a dog threaten a woman’s happiness? And what’s the deal with not allowing pets on the furniture anyway?

Continuing their new tradition of celebrating Opening Nights, Bob and Ro Productions will host a free wine-tasting before the Feb. 24 performance. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. to enjoy a glass of wine, a small snack and good company before the show.

Bob and Ro Productions presents “Sylvia” on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. Feb. 24 through April 1. Tickets are $20 general admission, $18 seniors, $15 students, and can be arranged by calling the box office at (877) 532-7171 between noon and 5 p.m. Tuesday through SaSat. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, The Studio Theatre, 1028 R St., Sacramento, CA 95811.

The Cameron Park Community Services District is teaming with Tumble Time Gymnastics and All Star Gymnastics & Cheer to offer programs for kids ages 0 to 14 years. Preschool Gymnastics, Gymnastics for Home School Students, Friday Night Parents Night Out, Baby Crawl and more — all with new classes starting in March.

If dance is something you’ve always wanted to try, or something you’ve been doing for years the Cameron Park CSD has dance classes for you. Our youth dance classes include Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Musical Theater and more. While our adult classes offer Ballroom Dance, Waltz, Foxtrot, Salsa, Cha-Cha and much more. There is a little something for everyone, even those with two left feet.

New Cameron Park CSD sports seasons are starting and the registration deadlines are quickly approaching. Flag Football for second- through eighth-graders will run April through June with one practice per week and games on Saturday afternoons; registration ends March 13. Adult Basketball March Wednesday League begins March 28 and will run through May 23. Teams can register together; individuals may register as free agents to be placed on a team.

Looking to work at the pool this summer? Take the lifeguard training class held at the Community Services District the week of April 2-6. This week-long class will teach you how to be a lifeguard. Must be 15 and pass a swim test.

Our featured classes this month are our brand new Youth Ballet classes and brand new adult Zumba Gold Toning classes. Youth Ballet classes are offered for 3- to 5-year-olds, 5- to 8-year-olds, and 8- to 12-year-olds. Ballet builds strength, flexibility, grace and poise — its’ fun also! These classes will introduce a solid foundation to ballet, focusing on the Cecchetti method.

Zumba Gold Toning classes are offered for ages 18 and older. This class involves low-to-moderate strength training. It will combine Zumba choreography and moves with the Zumba lightweight toning sticks to enhance endurance and muscle strength (Zumba toning sticks provided). This is a great way to have fun and improve your muscle strength and toning.

On Saturday, March 3, head to the Cameron Park Community Center, 2502 Country Club Drive, for a live, indoor concert performance by Sister Swing — a trio of vocalists that preserve the vintage jazz sounds of the girls groups of the 1930s & 1940s and their band The Chopped Liver Orchestra. Food and beverages will be for sale. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m. Pre-order tickets for $18, two for $34. Or buy tickets at the door for $20 each.
