Bear spotted in El Dorado Hills

Michael Saint John has seen deer, rattlesnakes and other wildlife in his neighborhood off Malcolm Dixon Road but he never expected the visitor he had Monday — a full-grown bear.

“It was taller than me and I’m 6 foot, 4 inches,” Saint John said, estimating the bear weighed between 400 and 500 pounds. “It looked like Bigfoot.”

He and the bear came eye to eye in Saint John’s Arroyo Vista Way backyard at about 1:45 p.m. Saint John had been watering and said he turned around — both he and the bear startled. Saint John ran into his home and called 911.

“I’ve lived here since 1989 and I’ve never heard of a bear here before,” he said.

Saint John said other neighbors also reported seeing the bear, which as of now has alluded officials called out to search for it.
