The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department announces its volunteer Sheriff’s Team of Active Retirees training academy will run March 7-18, 2011.
START Academy training hours are 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, with accompanying evening driver proficiency training and law enforcement support visitations. The academy concludes with a formal uniformed graduation on March 18.
The academy features many training activities the volunteer do as the “eyes and ears” for the Sheriff’s Department. Activities include, but are not limited to, assignments in marked patrol vehicles, vacation home checks, special community events support, traffic and parking control, radio communication, dealing with emergency incidents and basic law enforcement support.
STAR program qualifications:
- At least 50 yers old
- No criminal history
- Good driving record
- Physical clearance from a doctor
- Pass oral interview
Mandatory commitment requirements:
- Volunteer at least 16 hours a month
- Attend monthly, mandatory three-hour station meeting
- Purchase uniform
- Complete academy and subsequent 16 hours on field patrol training
- Attend Sheriff’s Department’s Citizens Academy within 18 months of becoming a STAR
The STAR Academy will be held at the Gold Hill area fire station on Gold Hill Road, off Cold Springs Road. If you are interested call the STAR office at (530) 621-7545 for an application and additional information.
Application deadline is Jan. 21, 2011. Applicant oral interviews will be held Feb. 7-11, 2011, at the Gold Hill station.
