Car show dedicated to organ, tissue donation

A love of cars, people, life and laughter summed up 17-year-old Scott Santana’s many passions. Now, his legacy is being propelled forward through the Live On, Drive On campaign begun by his parents in the wake of his fatal car accident.

Following his car crash on May 17, 2011, Scott’s family carried out his wishes as a registered donor. Scott saved five lives through organ donation, gave sight to two people and helped improve the lives of  countless others through tissue donation.

Three years to the day of his death, the Santana family will host the second annual Live On, Drive On! car show at Lakehills Church, 7000 Rossmore Drive in El Dorado Hills from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.

“In his memory we come together to share good times and raise money to support the Scott Santana Memorial Fund,” said Scott’s father, Rich Santana of Placerville. “One hundred percent of the proceeds go to support local high school scholarships and the Live On, Drive On! campaign designed to save and enhance even more lives through the Donate Life California Registry.”

The Santanas note that this year they are awarding two scholarships titled, “The Scott Santana Play in the Rain Scholarship,” which will go to deserving students who can make the most out of any situation and “play in the rain.”

Last year the Santanas attended more than 15 car-related events with Scott’s Live on, Drive On! message and registered many donors to encourage others to, as they put it, “be heroes like Scott.”

At the first Live On, Drive On! car show 100 automobiles were featured, including a McLaren, Scott’s own 1969 Triumph Trophy 250, muscle cars, hot rods, vintage dragsters and motorcycles. This year there will be live music, raffle prizes, vendors and an auction.  The Santanas hope this year’s car show will attract at least 130 cars — which would allow the foundation to give away more scholarships and expand the Donate Life California Registry campaign.

The event is free to spectators. To register cars or for more information visit scottsantana.org.
