Driver dies in solo wreck

An unidentified man died in a July 4 solo car wreck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At 12:55 p.m., the man was driving his 1989 Toyota two-door coupe in the No. 1 eastbound lane of Highway 50 east of Bass Lake Road, a CHP report states, when, for an unknown reason, he veered to the right and passed through the No. 2 and 3 lanes.

The vehicle continued off the right shoulder of the highway and down a dirt embankment. It collided with boulders, became airborne, flipped over, struck the embankment and another boulder. The driver was ejected from the car.

When the vehicle came to rest, it caught on fire and became fully engulfed. CHP, El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies and several fire agencies responded. Two lanes of eastbound Highway 50 were closed while the fire was extinguished.

The driver was pronounced dead at 1:17 p.m.
