EDUHSD launches virtual academy

El Dorado Union High School District announces that it is now accepting enrollment applications for its newly launched Virtual Academy.

The EDUHSD Virtual Academy is designed to be a rewarding and engaging online college preparatory program that combines the latest technology with specially credentialed high school teachers to offer students and families an alternative to the traditional comprehensive high school. The academy provides a gateway to APEX Learning, the most comprehensive online learning program offered. The Virtual Academy operates as a California certified charter school and is open to El Dorado County, Placer County, Amador County, Sacramento County and Alpine County students.

EDUHSD Virtual Academy uses not only the latest technology to deliver content, but also to communicate and monitor academic progress. Students and parents will have access to the Desire2Learn interface, which is a user friendly, intuitive learning management system with sophisticated course-building capabilities, extensive reporting, assessment and collaboration options, and organizational tools that allow teachers, students, and parents to easily participate and stay connected.

Students will have online access to APEX Learning’s course content. APEX is recognized nationally as the leading developer of college preparatory digital high school curriculum that specializes in Advanced Placement courses. Fourteen Advanced Placement courses are available, and students 16 and older may enroll in up to two courses each semester at Folsom Lake College, tuition free.  In addition, all of our credentialed teachers at the EDUHSD Virtual Academy are highly qualified having also earned certification as online educators.

“I am excited about the quality of this innovative academy,” said Christopher Moore, assistant superintendent for Educational Services. “El Dorado Union High School District is known for its academic excellence. It is our vision to offer students and families considering an online academy the best comprehensive and rigorous program that utilizes the latest technology and provides students with individualized support.

“The Virtual Academy is much more than an online program,” he continued. “Students will regularly meet with teachers at our main campus near Placerville, or at our satellite campus at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills. Both campuses will provide students with access to computer labs, science classrooms, and face-to-face support.”

Registration applications are now available for the 2012-13 school year, which begins in August. Students and families interested in learning more about this college preparatory Virtual Academy should visit the District website at www.eduhsd.net (link to schools, then EDUHSD Virtual Academy), or call (530) 622-6212, ext. 7001.   Parents may also obtain registration materials from the El Dorado Union High School District Office (4675 Missouri Flat Road, Placerville) or from the Counseling Office at Oak Ridge High School (1120 Harvard Way, El Dorado Hills).
