El Dorado County burn projects start today

CAMINO — The Amador-El Dorado Unit of Cal Fire will conduct a series of Vegetation Management Program burn projects in El Dorado County.

The first project is located in the Auburn Lake Trails perimeter shaded fuel break outside the town of Cool. The second project is the Bacchi VMP and it is located on the Bacchi Ranch north of Marshal Road and Prospectors Road in Garden Valley.  The final project is the Pine Hill Preserve Project which is located at the end of Pine Hill Road in Rescue.

All three projects will entail burning piles that were prepared this past summer by Cal Fire dozers and hand crews.

The burning of piles will take place between the hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 23 through November, when the precise weather conditions exist where the fuels will burn quickly and cleanly producing the least amount of smoke possible.

“All prescribed burn projects are the result of extensive pre-planning involving studies of the vegetation types, fuel loading, weather patterns, topography, values at risk and fire history,” said Cal Fire Unit Chief Kelly Keenan. “An environmental analysis is made for each project, along with mitigation measures to address any foreseeable impacts that may be caused by the fire. The target area for the prescribed fire project has control lines in place along with fire crews and firefighting equipment in strategic locations in order to maintain control of the fire once it is set.  We take these types of prescribed burns very seriously. My field personnel are highly trained and will not burn unless very specific parameters are met each day of the scheduled burns.”

The VMP burn projects will begin with a small “test burn” at the beginning of each day, as a final check to ensure that conditions are within “prescription.” If conditions are favorable, then the firefighters will begin ignition of vegetation piles within the project area allowing a low intensity slow burn to consume fuels.
