“It is important recognize young people for their contributions to their communities, schools, organizations and especially for their service to others,” said DJ Peterson, executive director of the Vision Coalition of El Dorado Hills. “When youth are engaged in community activities and feel that their efforts are valued, they are far more likely to make a successful transition through adolescence to adulthood.”

The Vision Coalition is funded primarily by grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Over the past five years, the organization has grown in strength and numbers by partnering with schools, parents, law enforcement, health professionals and others to increase services for youth. Members use positive youth development strategies in their work and provide asset-based training to organizations that work with youth. Through its mini-grant program, the Vision Coalition sponsors more than 25 local organizations to improve and develop their programs in order to expand opportunities for youth.
