El Dorado Hills Community Vision honors youth

The annual Youth STAR Awards, sponsored by of El Dorado Hills Community Vision Coalition, will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, at Lakehills Church, 7000 Rossmore Lane in El Dorado Hills.

The ceremony will include a formal banquet for 150 guests to recognize local youth for their outstanding contributions to community through leadership, mentoring, participation, and volunteerism.

Nominations are currently being requested from Vision Coalition partners as well as the community at large.

Nominees should be between 12 and 18 years old and residents of El Dorado County. The nominations will be reviewed for final selection by other youth, as well as the board and staff of the El Dorado Hills Community Vision Coalition. Awards will be presented by the coalition’s board of directors. Additionally, Assemblywoman Alyson Huber, will present a certificate from the office of the California State Assembly.

Nomination forms are available online at edhvisioncoalition.org and are due by Nov. 18.

“It is important recognize young people for their contributions to their communities, schools, organizations and especially for their service to others,” said DJ Peterson, executive director of the Vision Coalition of El Dorado Hills. “When youth are engaged in community activities and feel that their efforts are valued, they are far more likely to make a successful transition through adolescence to adulthood.”

The Vision Coalition is funded primarily by grants from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Over the past five years, the organization has grown in strength and numbers by partnering with schools, parents, law enforcement, health professionals and others to increase services for youth. Members use positive youth development strategies in their work and provide asset-based training to organizations that work with youth. Through its mini-grant program, the Vision Coalition sponsors more than 25 local organizations to improve and develop their programs in order to expand opportunities for youth.
