Girl Scouts fill Food Bank shelves
In February Girl Scouts Heart of Central California, Service Unit 151, El Dorado Hills, and Service Unit 152, Cameron Park, held an all day food drive at two grocery store locations to benefit the Food Bank of El Dorado County.
About 100 volunteers from 14 Girl Scout troops collected donations at Safeway in El Dorado Hills and Food 4 Less in Cameron Park. Each troop was responsible for a one-hour shift, during which the girls passed out flyers explaining the two donation options. Customers could either purchase a food voucher for $5, $10 or $20 representing specific food items or donate an item requested by the Food Bank.
Donations requested included: canned meats, canned soups, canned fruits and canned vegetables.
Marge Nager, Jessica Rogness and Ashley Sianez helped supervise and train the Girl Scouts at the Safeway store location. Nancy Sianez, Rebecca Rogness and Kelsey Nager helped train and supervise at the Food 4 Less location.
Approximately 1, 909 pounds of food donations were collected, along with more than $500 in food vouchers.
Participating were Girl Scout Troops 57, 850, 907, 913, 1281, 1564, 1887, 1889, 2018, 2158, 2159, 2160, 2318 and 2633. Senior Girl Scout Troop 1564 coordinated the event and served as the liaison between the Food Bank and Safeway and Food 4 Less.
