Local woman’s car hit by train in North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, ND — On Aug. 27 Grand Fork sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a train colliding with a car, later found to belong to an El Dorado Hills woman.

Deputies responded to North Washington Street and 23rd Avenue NE at about 1:14 a.m., according to a press release. They were advised that the car was unoccupied during the time of the collision. As they arrived at the scene, deputies observed a woman walking southbound on North Washington, a short distance from the crash.

After questioning her, deputies discovered the woman, identified as Tamara Michael, 52, of El Dorado Hills, was the driver, said Sgt. Kelly Mclean of the Grand Forks Sheriff’s Department. She was uninjured and was brought back to the scene of the crash, the press release stated.

Based on evidence at the scene, deputies concluded Michael had been driving northbound on North Washington and, instead of following the curve of the road to the west, drove straight and ended up off the road. While off the road she turned west, overshooting the railroad crossing intersection, and her 2013 Subaru became stuck on the tracks. She attempted to free her car, but was unsuccessful.

Michael left the vehicle and began walking away. After she left, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train hit the Subaru, Mclean said.

Michael was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The Subaru sustained “serious damage” from both driving off-road and being struck by the train.

Grand Forks Sector Border Patrol agents assisted during the incident.
