“Making what resources there are more available. Programs like Wind can really change lives, especially for young people like me who didn’t choose this lifestyle. Homeless people need more than food and clean clothes. They need transportation and opportunities.”

Donnie Maggard, Placerville
“This is a tough question, and I can’t tell you I have an answer. Having seen the problem up close in Placerville I can tell you that there’s a fine line between helping and enabling. We will continue to be a nuisance until someone figures this out.”

Lisa Campodonico, Rocklin
“We need to start by acknowledging that homelessness exists. I used to see all these homeless kids when I was driving around Sacramento and wonder why they weren’t in school. Now I work for Wind Youth Services and I hear what these kids have been through and it’s unbelievable. They’re survivors. There are families out there that need help.”
Mike Barr, Cameron Park
“One huge need among the Placerville homeless is access to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. Sacramento has recovery programs for the homeless; we have nothing in Placerville. At F.A.I.T.H. (Feeding and Inspiring the Homeless) we’re getting them out of the cold at night and trying to teach them to be accountable and responsible, but they need a lot more.”
Vivek Anand, Sacramento
“We need to know more about their underlying needs. This population has substance abuse problems and psychological issues that make us difficult to deal with. As a society we need to understand what homelessness is and why it occurs; then sincerely reach out a hand to help.”
