People Talk: Who was your first crush?

Asked at the Senior Valentine Luncheon

Carol Ann Ponik, Folsom: “I was 16 and he was bad … just out of reform school, with the cigarettes rolled up on his shoulder and a swagger that made my heart patter. I followed him around but he ignored me.”

Virginia Leonard, El Dorado Hills: “I was 19 when I met him. His name was Bill Leonard, and I eventually married him. Oh, I had little crushes before but this was a CRUSH. We used to go to the movies outdoors at night. Do they still do that?”

Gwen Garren, El Dorado Hills: “I had so many! But the best is the one I married. He was stationed at Hammer Field in Fresno just before the war. My neighbor took me to the 111 Club, which was on the base, and there he was at the end of the bar. We left and he tried to follow us, but we told him to get lost. Then he commandeered an ambulance and snuck off base to follow us home. A couple days later he showed up at my work and wouldn’t leave until I agreed to date him.”

Betty Englehardt, El Dorado Hills: “He was a neighbor boy. We were just 13 or 14. Of course nothing came of it. We were just kids.”

Don Weike, El Dorado Hills: “First grade — her name was Shirley Cripps. She had this long back hair. But nothing ever came of it. We went through school together and she went off to San Bernardino.”
