No one makes us cut them anymore.” There are two different programs that El Dorado Hills Fire uses to assist in public safety. The first is Public Resources Code 4291, Defensible Space. In summary, this requires improved properties (homes) to have 100’clearance of dry weeds and vegetation. The second is the Fire Departments, Unimproved Property Hazard Reduction Ordinance. This ordinance is above any State Law or Fire Code requirement. In summary, this program requires a 30’ clearance of dry weeds and vegetation away from any combustible source on unimproved lots less than five acres. Examples of a combustible source would be a home, wood fence or shed that would need the 30’ clearance. If there are no combustibles within 30’ then no clearance is required. The Fire Department spends hundreds of hours on these programs annually to provide an additional fire buffer for homes. In addition to these programs the Promontory Home Owners Association goes above and beyond by providing a 10’ weed clearance from the roadway.
