Prospective school board member workshop scheduled

PLACERVILLE  — The El Dorado County School Boards Association and the El Dorado County Office of Education will conduct a workshop for prospective school board members on Monday, June 4, at the El Dorado County Office of Education.

Registration is at 5 p.m. with the workshop taking place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The purpose of this workshop is to inform prospective school board members of their duties and responsibilities

Dr.Vicki L. Barber, El Dorado County Superintendent of Schools, said local board members and superintendents from various school districts will be on a panel to discuss topics such as time commitment, the Brown Act, policy development, budget responsibilities, and the general role that school boards have in public education today.

Ellen Driscoll, president of the El Dorado County School Boards Association, said anyone interested in serving on school board is encouraged to attend so they can be informed prior to filing for election. There are numerous board vacancies up for election in November 2012.

The filing dates are between July 16 and Aug. 10.Driscoll also stressed that the meeting is open to the public, not just people contemplating becoming a candidate for a school board.

There is no charge to attend this workshop, and a light dinner will be provided. Contact Janet Maruniak at (530) 295-2217 or mailjmaruniak@edcoe.org by Thursday, May 31, to register for the workshop.
