Quitting tobacco for a day could lead to quitting for good

The Great American Smokeout, a national campaign that asks smokers to give up tobacco for 24 hours in hopes that they will quit for good, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15 this year.

“We encourage anyone in El Dorado County who smokes to join in the Great American Smokeout,” said Christy White, supervising health education coordinator for the El Dorado County Tobacco Use Prevention Program. “The event is a great way for smokers to support one another in quitting.”

Smoking cigarettes is the No. 1 preventable cause of premature disease and death in the United States, according the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An estimated 19 percent of American adults and 11.9 percent of Californians are current smokers.

The Great American Smokeout is sponsored by the American Cancer Society, and is traditionally held on the third Thursday in November each year.

Many resources are available to help smokers quit, including the California Smokers’ Helpline that offers free over-the-phone counseling at 1-800-NO-BUTTS and online at californiasmokershelpline.org.

For additional resources, including locations of local stop smoking classes, contact TUPP at (530) 621-6142.

TUPP is a program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division, that provides education on smoking, secondhand smoke, tobacco laws and policies.  Program staff members also work to reduce illegal sales of tobacco to minors.
