Marina Village Middle School teachers and students came back from Thanksgiving break to find an area of their school had been beautified, thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Owen Lundell.

Owen and his work crew installed a planter, top soil, a variety of drought tolerant plants and a new drip system, turning a patch of weeds and dead bushes into vibrant green landscape.

“I am proud to give back to Marina,” said the ninth-grader now at Oak Ridge. “The school and teachers were so great to me.”

The Scout with Troop 645 started planning the landscaping project nine months ago. He hosted a car wash in September at Chevron to help raise the $800-plus needed.  He also received donations and discounts from Lowe’s.

Completing a project of this size is a large undertaking, especially for a teenager.

“The planning process and making it all come together was a big challenge,” Owen said. “It really took a lot of help from the troop, sponsors, friends and family to make it happen.”

“We are really proud of what Owen accomplished for the community,” Scoutmaster Karsten Vardas said. “One goal of an Eagle Scout project is to demonstrate leadership, and he certainly needed to use those skills for the fundraising and execution of this landscaping. Troop 645 congratulates him on getting it wrapped up.”
