Upcoming forum tackles mental health

Women’s Fund El Dorado announces its annual educational Community Needs Forum. This year’s topic is Providing Solutions to Mental Health Challenges.

The event will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23 at Cameron Park Community Center, 2502 Country Club Drive.

Retired County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vicki Barber will  moderate while panelists will speak about their areas of expertise regarding mental health challenges on the western slope and then they will field questions from the members of the audience.

Panelist Jon Lehrman, MD, recently retired after 40 years as a family physician. Lehrman served as medical director for New Morning Youth and Family Services for many years and has published a book on substance abuse. He is currently board chair and medical director for ACCEL, a countywide collaborative providing access to care and advocacy for the “safety net population.”

Panelist Carolyn Sauer, PhD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, has had a private counseling office in Placerville since 1990. Sauer is also the clinical supervisor for the county’s Senior Peer Counseling program. Prior to and during her tenure in Placerville she volunteered her skills at many area nonprofits.

Panelist David Toston is executive director of the El Dorado County Special Education Local Planning Area. The SELPA ensures special education services are available to all eligible children residing on the western slope of El Dorado County. Toston has worked in various educational institutions and programs since 1999.

The Women’s Fund El Dorado is a philanthropic collective giving organization and a fund of the El Dorado Community Foundation. Comprised of over 300 men and women, the Women’s Fund grants about $50,000 per year to member-selected nonprofits. Local nonprofits will be invited to apply for a WFED grant in February and in April the membership will vote to select the grant recipients for this year. Grant awards are announced in May and in June a Grants Gala is held to celebrate the grant recipients.
