Water gushed onto El Dorado Hills Boulevard Wednesday evening after an 8-inch water main broke, snarling traffic in front of the Senior Center and nearby businesses.

The busted pipe is located near a cluster of Sycamore trees in the median just south of Serrano Parkway.

El Dorado Irrigation District crews responded at 7:16 p.m., about an hour after the flooding started, and got the water shut off at 7:58 p.m., according to EID Communications Director Mary Lynn Carlton, who was on site Thursday morning with Operations Director Tom McKinney.

The presence of the trees and a natural gas pipeline nearby delayed the repair, she said.

A half-dozen businesses on the west side of El Dorado Hills Boulevard were affected but crews were able to reroute the water supply. Carlton anticipated full service would be restored by start-of-business Thursday.

Carlton also reported that crews had determined tree roots were the culprit, and said the Sycamore tree in question was coming down soon. Adjacent trees are also on top of the water main and would likely need to be cut, she added.

Sandi Kukkola, the assistant general manager of the El Dorado Hills Community Services District, confirmed that her maintenance staff is working with EID.

District 1 Supervisor-in-waiting Ron Mikulaco happened by shortly after the pipe broke. He reported that water poured off the median onto both sides of the boulevard, but that one lane in each direction remained open.

Lane closures will continue through Thursday morning while the tree is removed.
