Would you like to care for baby birds?

Despite recent low temperatures and storms spring is on the way, and Sierra Wildlife Rescue volunteers are gearing up to open the Baby Bird Nursery around May 1.

Caring for orphaned or injured nestlings or fledglings is a wonderful way to help and to learn a great deal about the fascinating lives of foothill songbirds. This year we also plan to take baby quails and turkeys so, if you have a soft spot for these little game birds, you will enjoy helping even more.

The nursery is located at SWR’s Wildlife Center, 3030 Newtown Road in Placerville.  SWR needs numerous volunteers each summer to feed the babies, since the youngest are fed about every half hour, 12 hours a day. Anyone who wishes to can sign up for two- or four-hour shifts, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., any day of the week, from May through July, and schedules are flexible. Children 11 or older are welcome to help, but must be supervised by a parent.

Two classes to teach you how to feed and care for the babies, titled Introduction to the Baby Bird Nursery, will be held on March 26 from 10 a.m.  to noon, and on April 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the center. If you can’t attend a class, hands-on training will also be available at the center every Wednesday at 5 p.m., May through July.

For more information on volunteering for the nursery or if you plan to attend a class call Barbara Barker at (530) 621-2650, since parking is limited. If you find any orphaned or injured baby or adult bird call (530) 621-4661, and you will be directed to our nursery information or an appropriate rehabber for an adult.

The baby birds need you, and we hope you will join us in caring for them.
