Purple Place serves up great breakfasts and more

By April 16, 2012

Quick question: Which legendary El Dorado Hills roadhouse has once again been named as El Dorado Hills best breakfast spot? Here’s a big hint: It’s purple.

The Purple Place has two faces: a friendly sports bar on one side and a fresh local grill on the other. The royal hue isn’t any particular nod to the Sacramento Kings, who appear regularly on the big-screen TVs in the bar. It’s the mix of leftover paint that a prior owner scrounged from the Folsom Dam and Prison.

El Dorado Hills residents Mike and Denise Hountalas purchased the violet venue in 2007, hoping to keep the historic roadhouse feel, kick the food up a couple notches and pump up Saturday nights with some live boogie music. Mission accomplished on all fronts.

The Purple Place serves up eclectic burgers, seven different salads, steaks, creative sandwiches and appetizers.

There’s also a kids menu and indulgent deserts… but oh those breakfasts.

The breakfast menu is full of hearty temptations, but the signature eggs Benedict wins out as local favorite.

Their success starts with good food, but Denise adds “this is a people business; it’s much more than just taking orders and serving up the food.”

Manager Lauren Churchill as a prime example. “People like Lauren make the difference,” said Denise. “People know her, and she knows them.”

Churchill agrees. “This place works because we’re all invested.”

The Purple Place kitchen opens at 7 a.m. every day, and doesn’t close until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends. The Purple Place is located at 363 Green Valley Road.
