Smog King rules

That familiar, yet unpleasant, message in your DMV registration notice stating that you need to get your vehicle checked at a smog test only station doesn’t have to ruin your day.

Stop by Smog King, where customers are treated with respect.

“I take care of people by just doing what is right,” said owner Tom Petrone, who lives in El Dorado Hills and also runs other Smog King shops in the Sacramento area.

A test only shop does not repair vehicles so there’s no conflict of interest, Petrone pointed out. The test simply tells customers if their vehicles meet smog emissions standards or not. The staff lets the vehicle owner decide what do if it does not pass.

Petrone opened the El Dorado Hills location in 2010. He started out in the business selling smog test equipment. “It’s just kind of in my blood now,“ he joked.

Smog King is located at 379 Green Valley Road in El Dorado Hills. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday.
