Baseball: Oak Ridge suffers tough 2-1 setback
SACRAMENTO — On the field, the Oak Ridge High baseball team outhit Granite Bay, 6-5. But the Grizzlies pulled out a thrilling 2-1 win over the Trojans in a pool play game Wednesday of the Boras Baseball Classic Tournament at Don McAuliffe Field.
“Offensively, we had plenty of opportunities to drive in a run,” Oak Ridge head coach Todd Melton said. “But we just didn’t get it done. We’re disappointed with the loss.”
The game was tied at 1-all entering the final inning when Granite Bay took advantage of an error, single and a sacrifice fly.
Oak Ridge (8-7) scored its lone run in the top of the second inning with one out. Kyle Barisone walked as did Jake Hathaway before Chris Ropplo singled to left field to drive in Barisone for a 1-0 lead.
Granite Bay responded in the bottom of the same inning on an infield single and double.
Four was a good number for Trojan pitcher Austin Vail. The senior gave up four hits and struck out four in six innings work.
“I think both teams got pretty good starting pitching,” said Melton, also referring to Granite Bay’s Ryan Brown. “Vail was real good for us; he did a great job.”
But the Trojans stranded six runners in scoring position, and eight in the game. The Grizzlies left only three ion the bases.
Despite the loss, Melton feels his team has grown from the start of the season to the spring break tournament in terms of playing good team ball. The Trojans return to Delta River League action Monday at home against Folsom.
“You have to keep looking for those growth spurts,” Melton said. “There’s a lot of growth for us. We’re looking for consistency. I’m glad we have all of these (league) games left before we get into the playoffs. That will be huge for us.”
Mickey Meinhofer was 2-for-3 for the Trojans. Hathaway and Roppolo, along with Tyson Solis and Andrew Lackowski, accounted for the Trojans’ hits, all singles.
“We’re getting some really good performances,” Melton said.
This was the second meeting in less than a month between Oak Ridge and Granite Bay. The Grizzlies produced a 5-1 nonleague win at the Trojans’ field March 27.
