The dress up came prior to Tuesday’s Ponderosa-Oak Ridge boys volleyball match where both teams donned an array of costumes during warmups. The dress down occurred once play began as the visiting Bruins swept the Trojans 25-14, 25-23, 25-17.
Ponderosa claimed its seventh straight win with the sweep while Oak Ridge’s three-game winning streak came to an end.
In a match pitting brothers: Ponderosa’s Kory Barri against his younger brother, Trojan Chase Barri, each team played well throughout the entire match. The Bruins led 6-3 after Griffin O’Camb sent through a scorching kill, but Michael Montejano led the Trojans back as they trailed 11-12. The next point, a near save by Montejano of a Kory Barri shot, went out of bounds and Ponderosa never looked back.
Duncan Alexander and O’Camb served three aces as the Bruins went on a 9-3 run to take a 23-14 lead. A Ryan Albertazzi point and a Alexander shot that was deflected out-of-bounds by the Trojans clinched the first set for Ponderosa.
After a sensational block by Alexander and a beautiful tip by Albertazzi over two Oak Ridge defenders gave Ponderosa an early 4-1 lead, the Bruins were primed to run away with the second set before a trio of aces from Trent Stigerts tied the game up at 7-all.
Stigerts ended a long rally with a powerful kill to give Oak Ridge its first lead of the set and the hosts extended on a kill by Montejano. The score was tied six times prior to an attempted Storm Van Soldt kill for Oak Ridge hit the net to tie it at 21-21.
Oak Ridge went up 23-21 but after a Trojan net violation, Alexander and Albertazzi teamed up on a huge block that tied it up at 23. After an Alexander ace put Ponderosa on the verge of taking the set, Kory Barri rejected a Brock Middleton hit as the Bruins had control with a 2-0 advantage.
Ponderosa carried over its momentum to start well in the third set. After two Alexander kills sandwiched a Kory Barri kill, Albertazzi and O’Camb combined on a block that gave the Bruins a 4-1 lead. Ponderosa went on a 8-2 run after that, highlighted by a Taylor Charron kill and another Alexander block to put the visitors up 11-3.
Oak Ridge didn’t wilt but the Bruins were simply too much for the young Trojans. O’Camb and Kory Barri combined for three kills, one Barri absolutely scorched. Oak Ridge battled back to make it 17-24, but an attempted block by Troy fell on their side of the court to end it.
