Bruins, Trojans crown six DRL champs
EL DORADO HILLS — A combined 32 varsity athletes fom Oak Ridge and Ponderosa punched their tickets to Wendesday’s and Friday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division I meet at Elk Grove High after qualifying performances at last week’s Delta River League Championships at the Trojans’ track.
The top four in each event advanced as did those meeting/surpassing the At Large standards.
Team-wise, Oak Ridge’s girls came in third and the Lady Bruins were fifth. For boys, Oak Ridge was fourth and Ponderosa sixth.
Jesuit’s boys won the meet as did St. Francis for the girls. The same held true for the league standings with the Marauders and Troubadours taking the respective titles. With a 7-3 record, the Lady Trojans were second while the Bruin girls were fifth (3-7). Those records on the boys side translated to Oak Ridge taking third and Ponderosa, fourth.
Troy advanced 18 to this week’s action, several whom will also double up in events. Included are two individual DRL champs.
The Bruins send 14 to Elk Grove, including four individual league champions. Also advancing is Ponderosa’s boys 4×400 relay team and its 4×100 girls relay squad. Several Bruins qualified in multiple events.
Six schools in all competed at Wednesday’s trails and Friday’s finals that ended under the stadium lights.
Ponderosa’s champions were Brittany Anselmo and Josh Boiler in the 800 metter races; Kenna Davidson in the high jump and Robert Holloway in the boys pole vault.
Anselmo’s win was by less than a second (2:19.76-2:20.50) over Folsom’s Muna Alhamad. Boiler’s cushion (1:56.59-1:58.11) over Sheldon’s Xavier Gulman was slightly bigger.
On the field, Davidson’s winning height was two inches higher than Trojan freshman Alexa Ray. Holloway’s clear (15-1) on vaults actually matched Oak Ridge’s Austin Laut but the Bruin made his in fewer attempts to grab the top spot.
The Trojans champions were high-jumper William Vaugh whose winning height (6-5) bested the field by seven inches. Oak Ridge pole vaulter Ashley Dean scaled 9-8 to win the girls competition, three inches higher than Ponderosa’s Rylee Johnson.
