The Foothill Thrower’s track group holds its fourth annual Shot Put and Discus Clinic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 11 at Ponderosa High School.
The clinic will feature 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and current American record holder in the women’s discus, Stepfanie Brown-Trafton, who’ll head up the coaching staff.
Assisting will be a strong staff of coaches including: Jeff Magley, Sacramento State Head Throws Coach; Dave Popejoy, 1996 Olympic Hammer Thrower and Stanford’s all-time top hammer thrower; and brian Masterson, Stanford’s second all-time hammer thrower.
Also assisting will be: Mike Curry, head coach for the Golden State Throwers and throws coach at Elk Grove High; Dana Fahey and Ron Beach, Call Poly track and field alumnus; and Dave Mosbacher, assistant throws coach at Ponderosa.
The clinic provides an opportunity to expose boys and girls ages 12-18 in El Dorado County and outlying areas to the possibilities that track and field, specifically shot put and discus, can provide to students who may not have considered it as a means to cover the ever-increasing costs to attend college.
The focus of the clinic is to provide various levels of skills training and exercises in proper shot put and discus techniques and to allow young athletes to mix with Olympic-level athletes.
This year’s venue will also include an introduction to the hammer throw with demonstrations by Popejoy and Masterson as well as a break-out session for those interested in learning more about the hammer throw.
The clinic is $25 per athlete and includes snacks, lunch and a T-shirt for all participants. Space is limited to 50 participants and is on a first come basis. Contact Dave Mosbacher at (530)417-4211 or via email at [email protected] to register and for space availability and questions.
