Frosh/soph girls win third cross country invitational

The Oak Ridge cross country teams placed well at last weekend’s Nevada Union Invitational at Neveda Union High School.

The frosh/soph boys team placed third with 68 points and the frosh/soph girls team placed first with 60 points. The frosh/soph boys team was lead by Colin Pilcher (7th place) and JT Janecek (10th). The frosh/soph girls team was lead by Maddie DeZordo (4th place) and Sami Kilcollins (6th place).

The Nevada Union course is a challenging three-mile course over hilly terrain. It was the first three-mile race for many of the runners. The Oak Ridge cross country runners put in excellent efforts on the course. The finish was very exciting when the runners raced down the final hill and then sprinted up a small hill to enter the track stadium to finish on the infield with an 80 meter sprint.

The frosh/soph boys’ team just missed tying Sheldon by 2 points. They are looking forward to racing Sheldon again at the first league meet on Oct. 5. The frosh/soph girls’ team kept up their winning streak. They have won all three of their invitationals this season.

Frank Sciales led the varsity boys by placing 71st with a time of 20:21. Taylor Ashby was the only varsity girl to run and she raced well by placing 16th with a time of 21:43. The top 20 athletes in each race received medals and the winning teams received championship T-shirts for the top seven runners on the team.

The varsity boys (Dusty Armstrong, Evan Baxter, Marcos Conde, Sean McHone, Ryan Prestegard, Zach Thornton, Jake Zeltner) and varsity girls (Sabrina Andrus, Holli Arrieta, Reaghan Emrick, Maxine Goyette, Mikayla Mefford, Rachel Peterson, Ellie Velez), who will competing at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 24, did not compete at the Nevada Union Invitational. They completed a long run at Lake Natoma on Saturday. The varsity athletes competing at the Stanford invitational are looking forward to competing in the D1 races (boys race at 12:10 and girls race at 12:40). The 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) Stanford course is held on the campus’ golf course.
