Lady Bruins, Trojans booters end contest in draw

SHINGLE SPRINGS — In a match fought tooth and nail, the Oak Ridge Trojans and Ponderosa Bruins girls soccer teams played to a gritty 0-0 draw Monday in an intra-county and Delta River League contest at Simon Bruin Stadium.

More than once, each team’s offense had opportunities to break the double-donut, but great keeping by Oak Ridge’s Nina Grimes and a duel-effort by Ponderosa’s Jenna Hufford and Allanah John kept the match scoreless for 80 minutes.

The Bruins had a chance to strike first in the fifth minute as Kelsey Anderson was in the open field, but her shot barely flew over the crossbar. Anderson had another opportunity a mere 30 seconds later, but Grimes forced the shot wide.

Oak Ridge’s first opportunity came closer to scoring. Adrienne Chimenti’s aggressive defense resulted in a two-on-one fast break, but Hannah Miller’s shot on goal nicked off the goalpost. Play slowed down until the 20th minute when Chimenti’s shot was saved.

In the 27th minute, Ponderosa’s Elena Hanson was able to get a clean shot off, but Grimes was in front. Four minutes later, Grimes turned back Aubrey Wimmer who nearly scored on a free kick from midfield.

In the second half, the goalies maintained control. In the 56th minute, Ponderosa’s Sheridan Fox was stopped twice by Grimes in a crowded goalie box. In the 67th, Miller found space in the open field, and had a one-on-one shot that John, showing quick reflexes, sent out-of-bounds.

Ponderosa almost decided Monday’s match in the waning minutes. Bruin Amanda Maiello lost her defender and sent a self-pass ahead that a sliding Grimes got to but couldn’t maintain complete control as the ball squirmed out of her outstretched arms.

With no goalie to compete with, Maiello had an open goal but Grimes recovered to just get a finger on Maiello’s shot, deflecting it out. Ponderosa had a corner kick, but couldn’t convert, and the two teams ended with a scoreless draw.

Both schools resume league play on Wednesday. Ponderosa (2-1-4, 8-5-6) will host Folsom and Oak Ridge ( 1-1-5, 4-8-5 league) plays at Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove.
