Lady Trojans back-to-back championship dream dashed

By March 11, 2011

The Oak Ridge High School’s girls basketball team won’t get a chance at Division 1 Championship title this year.

The Lady Trojans’ bid to return to the NorCal finals ended Thursday as host and top seed Berkeley eliminated them 75-49 in second-round action. Oak Ridge, which beat Berkeley in last season’s state title run, finished with a 21-11 record.

Prior to the game, coach Steve White acknowledged that his girls would have their work cut out for them against the Yellowjackets.

“They’re (Berkeley) very good and have everyone returning except one,” White said. “It’ll be a tough game.”

To get to what would be their final game of the season the Lady Trojans took out host Lowell, 56-31, in March 8’s Northern California Regional Tournament opener at Kezar Pavilion. In that game seniors Natalie Stone and Dakota McLarnan each sank four three-pointers to lead the offense while Jenna Klein keyed the Trojans’ trapping-pressing defense that caused Lowell (28-5) fits.

The team finished the 2010-11 season with 21 wins and 11 losses (8 wins and 2 losses in league play).
