Lady Trojans beat Golden Sierra in 4

Oak Ridge’s varsity volleyball team sent the Golden Sierra home with a loss after the Trojans first home game of the season.

The girls beat the Grizzlies in four, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19.

Coach Becky Potter said she was optimistic about the season despite losing four “very impactful seniors” last year. “They’re really positive. outgoing, hard working girls,” she said. “I think it could be a long season for us.”

The Lady Trojans lost the first game, giving Golden Sierra multiple points on errors, but regained their composure in the next three.

Oak ridge surged ahead 6-0 in the second game and never let the Grizzlies get within five points. The third game was neck and neck until Hayley Correll got on the service line. Her three aces gave the girls some momentum and they never gave up the lead. Mysha Davies and Correll made some key blocks. When the Grizzlies made it past defenders at the net Maddie Chambilss and Maddie DeGeorge flew onto the floor for some tough digs.

The Grizzlies fought back in the fourth, sticking close to the Lady Trojans thanks to a few Oak Ridge errors but the squad stepped up when the score reached 5-5. Davies kicked off a five-point run with a kill that sailed over defenders and DeGeorge followed that up with an ace. Marisa McConnell blocked a strong Grizzly kill and Tara McDermott followed the save up with a successful kill. Another DeGeorge ace kept the ball rolling and, despite having a four-point run fo their own, Golden Sierra never caught up.

The junior varsity squad also won its match against the Grizzlies.
