FOLSOM — To end the first round of Delta River League action, the Oak Ridge High girls tennis team won seven of nine matches in straight sets Tuesday afternoon at the Broadstone Racquet Club, blanking intra county and league rival Ponderosa, 9-0.
The Trojans (12-3, 5-0) swept doubles and won four-of- six singles matches in straight sets. One that went three games was Oak Ridge’s No. 1 Rachael Librach who outlasted Bruin Ashley Tank, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8.
“She’s a grinder,” said Trojan coach Ralph Clark on Librach’s playing style. “She’s a really good player and works really hard out there. She’s very effective and probably more than anything else, she’s incredibly smart player. A lot of times she loses the first set, figures things out and comes back and wins the next two sets.”
Teja Chalamcherla, Oak Ridge’s No. 2 singles player, upended the Bruins’ Tiffany Prather in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
“She’s a solid player,” said Clark of Chalamcherla. “Her job is to get on and off the court as quickly as possible. She’s playing really good right now.”
Prather spoke highly of her opponent.
“She is really good,” Prather said. “I couldn’t return most of her serves.”
Troy’s No. 1 doubles team of Heather Dunham and Ashlee Gonzales defeated the Bruins’ Katie Wright and Sam Olson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
“We’re still trying to solidify some of our doubles teams and players,” said Clark, who’s in his ninth season as head coach. “That’s a little bit more work in progress. We’re basically preparing for the (Sac-Joaquin Section Division I team) playoffs.”
Gonzales and Dunham, both juniors, were playing only their third match together as a doubles team.
“We’re doing pretty good,” Gonzales said.
Each player’s strengths compliments the other which helped against Wright and Olson.
“Heather is real good at getting to the ball,” Gonzales said. “She’s real athletic.”
Dunham on Gonzales, “Ashlee is real good at getting everything back, even shots that are hard to get to.”
Ponderosa (2-3-1, 1-4) is in a rebuilding year that fourth-year head coach Don Eddy feels will continue to grow around Tank, a freshman whose record in league is 2-3.
“She is super steady,” said Eddy on Tank. “She’s just going to keep improving.”
