Hoffman named MVP

A 12-2 spurt to close the third quarter and a solid defensive effort in the fourth carried Oak Ridge past Nevada Union 57-44 for the Shoot-Out title Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Trojans broke from a 32-all tie to lead 44-34 and extended over the final eight minutes in what had been a closely contested battle. In debuting its expansive new gym, Oak Ridge went 3-0 over the weekend including victories over Red Bluff and Davis.

‘That was a nice run (to end the third quarter); we had stops, hit shots and converted points off turnovers,” Trojan coach Steve White said.

Shoot-Out MVP Jenn Hoffman scored 13 of her team-high 16 in the second half. Shelby Peters, Isamar Conde and Saraya Smith each added nine points while Grace Derksen chipped in with eight.

Derksen and Smith were instrumental in the third quarter burst with five points each. Hoffman’s two free throws opened the run, Smith followed her own miss for an and-one, Derksen drove in, Smith went baseline and Derksen popped from outside.

“We preach that it’s a game of runs and tonight ours lasted longer than theirs did,” White said. “Defensively this was one of our better games this year while offensively we had good patience.”

Oak Ridge opened the tournament with a 67-47 win over Red Bluff. Hoffman pumped in 15 points; Ali Bettencourt added 11 and Smith poured in nine. In Friday’s 56-41 victory over Davis, Bettencourt dropped in 16 points; Smith scored 13; and Conde added nine points.

“Our first game everyone was amped and it was like a preseason scrimmage where the ball flies all over the place. We played well in our second game, particularly on defense and today we combined both ends of the floor which was nice to see,” White said.

Bettencourt and Smith were selected to the All-Tournament team.
