Lady Trojans fall to St. Francis
SHINGLE SPRINGS — In a Delta River League volleyball showdown Wednesday, Oak Ridge battled St. Francis for every point but was defeated in three sets, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 at the Ponderosa gym.
“They did everything they could,” Oak Ridge co-head coach Bre Horton said of her team. “They definitely had the fight in them tonight.”
Oak Ridge’s starting six of Olivia Reid, Erin Krigger, Kelly Krigger, Marissa Quilici and Elizabeth Cameron, plus Hayley Corell, Delaney Chaplin and Mora McVicar coming off the bench, responded to most of what St. Francis’ threw at them.
In the first set, Oak Ridge jumped out to an 11-9 lead and then 13-9 after a kill by Quilici but the Troubadours rallied. The Lady Trojans cut the Troubadours’ lead to 24-23 thanks to more kills at the net from Quilici and Maddie DeGeorge before a kill from St. Francis’ Megan Sullivan secured the first game.
The second and third sets was déjà vu for both teams. St. Francis overcame an early Oak Ridge (4-1, 13-9) advantage in the second set while in the third, the Troubadours went on a 15-10 run to finish out the set and win.
Despite the setback, Horton feels confident her team will continue to improve.
“Our biggest thing that we’ve been working on is recovering from mistakes quickly,” Horton said. “Acknowledging what other teams are doing and adjusting as fast as possible.”
The freshman squad also fell to St. Francis, 2-0. Earlier int he week, the varsity volleyball team topped Pleasant Grove in the league game at Ponderosa High School, 20-25, 26 -24, 25-10, 25-23.
