Ali Bettencourt buried four, first-half three-pointers — three early in the game — and Saraya Smith scored all 10 of her points in the second quarter as host Oak Ridge clinched the Delta River League title with Tuesday’s ‘Pink Zone’ 68-50 victory over St. Francis.
Just two teams, Sheldon (tonight) and Ponderosa, stand in the way of an undefeated league record, one of several plateaus the Lady Trojans have targeted.
“For us the playoffs started tonight and our goal is a state championship,” Bettencourt said. “We knew they’d (Troubadours) be competitive so our mindset was to take care of business in our house and make a statement.”
Oak Ridge did. It wasn’t that St. Francis played poorly … the Trojans played well — particularly offensively, especially from the perimeter.
Bettencourt’s trio of threes sprang Troy to a 10-point lead and Oak Ridge also received threes from Jenn Hoffman and Yumi Drossos, Overall, Oak Ridge sank eight from behind the arc to match last Saturday’s output against Del Oro.
“We shot the ball really well in the first quarter but then hit a bit of cold spell and they (St. Francis) made a run,” Trojan coach Steve White said.
The Troubadours did get to within seven in the second quarter but still trailed by 20 at the half thanks to Smith’s spark of the bench.
“I always want to bring intensity,” Smith said. “Come in, help out and help set the pace.”
Oak Ridge stretched its lead to 25 at one point of the third. Though the Troubadours tightened the score, the Trojans coasted to the win.
After Bettencourt and Smith, Drossos scored eight points; Shelby Peters, Michelle Barkley, Grace Derksen and Celeste Vitolas (eight rebounds) each had six points; Hottman and Briana Dulgar both added four and Isamar Conde chipped in with two points.
Oak Ridge celebrates its Senior Night tonight.
