Mother Lode Girls Rugby close to the trophy
The Mother Lode Girls Rugby team hopes to compete in the National Championship in Utah on May 20-22. They’ve got the talent; now they need the cash.
The team is looking for sponsorships and donations. The girls recently held a pancake breakfast fundraiser in Cameron Park but they need the community’s continuous support to get to Utah.
Mother Lode Girls Rugby, previously ranked 10th in the nation but expected to move up, recently defeated the fourth ranked team at the Fullerton International High School Rugby Tournament, taking second in the championship game to the third nationally ranked team. Regional playoffs on the way to the National Championship begin May 7. The girls will face Utah’s No. 1 team at Union Mine High School in El Dorado. The winner of that game earns the No. 1 seed in Nationals.
The Mother Lode Rugby Club in El Dorado County established in 1995 and currently includes four teams — varsity boys, frosh/soph boys, junior high boys and U-19 girls. The teams draws from four local high schools — Oak Ridge, Ponderosa, Union Mine and El Dorado — and the girls team has been one of the top teams in Northern California for the past several years.
