Oak Ridge boys drop tight match

After a successful comeback to regain the lead, the Oak Ridge lacrosse team couldn’t stay in front and lost a 10-9 heartbreaker to visiting Bella Vista Tuesday.

The Broncos took control from the get-go, leading 4-0 headed to the second quarter.

As the Trojan defense tightened behind goalie Jacob Ochs, Josh Wellman found a wide-open Cayd Rich for Oak Ridge’s first goal. Bella Vista added another goal but Tanner Rosenbaum answered  and Wellman scored again near the end of the half to pull the Trojans within three at 6-3.

Oak Ridge came out a different team for the second half and it showed. Cody Place opened with a goal at the 10:29 mark and a Rich goal off a Wellman pass from behind the net pulled the Trojans within 6-5. Bella Vista scored to re-up the lead to 7-5, but Rich exploited a breakdown in the Bronco defense, drawing a one-on-one with the goalie and finished.

At the 4:05 mark, Rosenbaum’s steal and score tied it up at 7 apiece. With 1:35 left in the quarter, Rosenbaum knocked the ball loose and scored as the Trojans took their first lead of the night, 8-7, headed to the final quarter.

The Broncos remained resilient and after tying the game, retook the lead at the 4:32 mark of the fourth. Kevin Leis added another goal to extend and the Broncos had control. But, with 1:12 left, Rich muscled his way for a goal and the Trojans had the ball with 10 seconds remaining and several shots to tie. Wellman took them but they flew awry as the Broncos held on.
