Oak Ridge opens with road win

ROCKLIN — In a season-opening matchup between past section champions, Oak Ridge defeated host Whitney 44-19 to kick off the preseason schedule Friday.

The Trojans, winners of four D-II titles, put points on the board in each quarter while the Wildcats, the 2008 D-IV champs, scored twice in the final 6:47 after falling behind by 38 points.

Whitney has realigned to D-II competition and will be with Ponderosa in the Capital Valley Conference this season.

Troy quarterback Ian Book completed 16-of-19 passes for 294 yards, 122 to Stephen Douglas. Book also threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another 42 yards.

Oak Ridge ate up 149 yards on the ground, averaging 5 yards per carry, and came away with another four touchdowns to move to 1-0 heading to this week’s home opener with Vacaville, the first of four consecutive games the Trojans will host.

Friday’s matchup was defensive to start. Adam Walter’s 42-yard field goal late in the first quarter was the only score in the first 12 minutes of action,

Oak Ridge’s first touchdown came on Andrew Lackowski’s 8-yard run at 9:35 of the second quarter, one of two he scored. Though Walter’s extra point kick was blocked, the Trojans came right back with Dalton Santos’ 1=yard touchdown and a Book-to-Ryan Sullivan two-point conversion pass.

Troy led 17-6 at the half and extended early in the third quarter when Lackowski added his second rushing score, this one from the 3 yard line. Walters split the uprights.

Still in the third, Book then tossed a pair of touchdowns — 7 yards to Tommy Dunnigan and 14 to Camden Cicchetti with Walter converting one of two PATs.

Oak Ridge pushed its advantage to 44-6 on the Gage Webb’s 5-yard run and Walter’s extra kick.

Defensively, Troy intercepted Whitney quarterback Hunter Rodrigues twice. Rodrigues did pass for 236 yards and two touchdowns to Devin Brocchini.
