Oak Ridge rolls into Toss-Up finals

EL DORADO HILLS — Oak Ridge High’s varsity girls basketball program put together two well-earned wins this weekend at its annual Trojan Toss-Up — defeating Inderkum 72-36 Friday  before conquering River City 57-32 Saturday.

In reaching the finals, Oak Ridge takes on Cardinal Newman tonight at 8:15.

Troy set the tone early with stifling defense and a 16-2 first quarter. The Raiders pushed in the second and third quarters to stay in the running, but Oak Ridge’s press proved to be too much to overcome.

“We played alright,” head coach Steve White said. “We need to be able to adjust our play with the way the game was being called but I think we played an effective defensive game and had great momentum on offense at times. It felt like we lost it a few times, towards the end of the third quarter for about four minutes and a couple other times, but we got through those spots and pushed through well.”

Heading into the half at 33-14, River City outscored Troy 13-11 in the third quarter but Oak Ridge reset its focus and held the Raiders to five points in the fourth while dropping 13.

Celeste Vitolas’ scoreless first quarter wasn’t enough to deter her from putting up a game-high 12 points. Jenn Hoffman collected all nine of her points in the first half, with a pair of deep three-pointers and a 3-for-4 performance at the free throw line.

“Celeste [Vitolas] did a great job for us in the post tonight,” White said. “She played good defense and established herself.”

Shelby Peters finished with seven points, Conde Isamar had six while Grace Derksen, Ali Bettencourt, Saraya Smith and Yumi Drossos each scored five.

Sophomores Laure Soper and Briana Dulgar got in on the scoring as well; Soper anted up with a fourth quarter field goal while Dulgar hit a free-throw to round out Troy’s offense.

Against Inderkum, Peters led the scoring Friday night with 15 points while Bettencourt tossed in four daggers from beyond the arc en route to 14 points, Smith contributed 13 and Vitolas had 12.

Oak Ridge dismantled Inderkum’s first-half goals with an aggressive defense that pushed the tempo beyond the visitors’ capacity.
